Cloned Autel MS-509 Scanner Modification

I am also a victim of a fake or a cloned MS-509, I didn't noticed that this product has no upcoming manufacturer's update and discontinued it's production. I've searched over the internet for a cheap and quality scanner over a year ago and decided to buy an Autel MS-509. Now that i bought this product I only wanted is to update its DTC version. I don't know if what version of my DTC installed in my clone MS-509 but to make sure I want to upload DTC from original manufacturer's site when they've last updated it and that is version 2.60.

How to know if you bought a Fake or a Cloned Autel MS-509?

1. All fake unit's comes up with SN# mS505245 is 99.9% cloned. reference#1 reference#2
2. It will not power on a 9V batteries.
3, Can't detect by a PC when Plugging in.

When you see this then " Welcome to the Club" you are now cheated. But luckily our unit is almost perfectly cloned, most all of the components are same with the genuine MS-509 except  the missing components in USB ways.

The picture below is  a CEN-TECH 98164 same as Autel MS-509 PCB

reference picture is came from this blog

Comparing to this image with my Cloned MS-509 is  the two components in red arrows are not exist on my unit. Without this two components the device cannot be detected by a PC.

Missing Components:

1. FTDI FT232BL
2. 6MHZ Crystal Oscilator

Without these two components your cloned MS-509 will not connect to a PC. Aside from these two parts we must determine if the pin out from the OBD2 connector is attached to the PCB. I manage to figured out ways of 4 USB pin

Luckily, I have FDTI FT232BL and 6MHZ Oscilator from my old UFS Box then transfer it to my MS-509 cloned.

Then after transferring the 6MHZ Crystal Oscilator and FTDI chips using Hot Air and Soldering Iron, Voila, my MS-509 cloned is now detected as USB to Serial with my PC.

I think you can also use Mobile cable like CA-42 or DKU-5 from nokia, these cable comes with a USB to Serial driver, Just do some modification and search the FDTI FT232BL  pinout.

Now that my MS-509 is detected as COM4, i tried to update the DTC with MAXILINK SOFTWARE.

I see no difference with my unit's LIB  version with DTC supplied by original manufacturer, By the way this is my TOOL INFORMATION:

Serial No: MS505245
Burn Date: 09/11/08
S/W Version:  V2.03
H/W Version: V1.50
LIB Version: V2.60

My theory for this China Cloned product is it works like the original scanner and you don't need to update its software because the DTC is same as the last update you can find from this product not unless you want to modify the DTC. And dont compare your cloned MS-509 to other scanner especially when Linking ERROR, compare it to the genuine MS-509 so you may know if there is a downside with your cloned scanner. just my 2cents.

I will attempt to read the two Atmel IC for backup purposes with my Universal Programmer and I will try to update to some different Version and will post it here the results.

Please, this experiment is for my Curiosity and for the victims of fake MS-509, I don't encourage you to buy this cloned scanner. Any attempt to open and modify your scanner is at your own risk and responsibilities. My scanner maybe different from yours so use this information at your own risk.
